Charge Cars is growing and we’re on the lookout for new people to join our West London HQ. The roles we are looking to fill span from engineering and design to Android development. This is an exciting time and incredible opportunity for those wanting to get stuck in and deep dive into the Electric Vehicle Industry.

With diverse experience under her belt, Chief of Talent Julie McTear shares some top tips on how to land an interview and the qualities she looks for in an ideal candidate.

Julie McTear, Chief of Talent at Charge Cars

1. The hiring process and real life examples.

Julie explains her hiring style, “When interviewing potential candidates I prioritise transparency, honesty, and tell it like it is. It’s an important decision for Charge Cars as well as the candidate, so they can make an informed choice about their next career step. At the end of the day, it’s important that every new starter arrives with a good insight on what it’s like working here so they are prepared for our set-up and demands.”

Her tips on being prepared for the interview, “Be able to provide examples that come from real life experiences. We want to know you are able to do the tasks at hand, show that you can be agile. These examples will show us that you are proactive and will go the extra mile.”

2. Demonstrate that you can thrive in a fast growing and changing environment.

Our headcount stands at just over 50 people. Hard to imagine that a year ago we were only half of that! A unique thing about Charge Cars is that everyday is different. Sometimes there are no parameters where one job begins and another one ends. This can be an ideal environment for those who thrive in fast growing and evolving environments, where opportunities can fast-track your skills and growth. It can be unpredictable at times, but the power of teamwork is great here and everyone helps get the job done.

3. A positive, solutions-based outlook.

Since the inception of the company, we’ve hired people carefully. As a result, we have a high performing, cohesive team. In particular, our team consists of dedicated people who have a “can do, will do” attitude. It’s important we keep our team special and retain our close-knit spirit which brings us together.

The company really stands apart; we have a fairly flat hierarchy and work seamlessly across teams. Without any legacy, we are all encouraged to seek out new ideas and solutions to each new challenge we face. There is lots of opportunity to get involved in new areas of interest — great news for your own development.

Julie explains with COVID-19 during the difficult times last year, “It was good to see how everyone helped each other, proactively coming up with solutions and helping us all deliver. Colleagues draw on the cooperation and appreciation of each other during these difficult times. As a result we have emerged even stronger through these challenges.”

4. A great culture fit.

“The initial thing I look for is a great culture fit. This is the most important thing of all.” Julie looks for candidates that display genuine excitement and passion to be a part of the Charge Cars team. The company touts a low turnover and low attrition, which goes to show how a positive team with a great working culture can contribute to a happy team environment. “We have a lot of passion, our team consists of spunky and talented people who are happy to come from larger teams, draw from their experiences and tailor these to the culture and style of Charge Cars.”

“It’s an exciting pioneering project; you come to work everyday, you look at the Electric Mustang by Charge Cars and it’s just such an iconic car. For many people,” Julie says, “it’s a dream come true. It’s a very different way of working and it’s one of the exciting aspects of working on a project of this scope.”
