In our latest Switching Gears we catch up with Lorenzo, one of our Build Technicians at Charge Cars. He tells us why being adaptable is key nowadays and why the EV trend is just beginning.

Lorenzo Farratro, Build Technician

Describe your day as a build technician at Charge Cars?

Usually, my day at work consists of arriving early for a cup of coffee and some breakfast. After that, most of my day is spent entirely on building the ’67s. Working on the interior, exterior, front and rear drive units, as well as working together with engineers to solve and overcome any issues we may encounter.

Top tip for someone entering your field of work?

My top tip, for anyone, is simply to have patience. In this job you may encounter numerous obstacles and having the patience to work with your team and get the problem sorted is the number one priority. It will make the job and working life a lot easier.

What trend, if any, is shaping your area of work right now?

Well, the main trend in the automotive industry is EV vehicles themselves, however this is not a trend, their implementation is inevitable. Technicians in the motor trade are having to adapt and learn new skills in order to build, diagnose and work safely on EV cars in a completely different way to what they have been doing since the start of their career, as I said this isn’t really a trend. It’s the direction in which the future is heading. Being adaptable is the key skill in this job.

Working here, what are you most looking forward to?

I’m most looking forward to the customers receiving their cars. To be able to see how people react to the product we’ve worked so passionately and hard on is a feeling like no other.

I take a lot of pride in the work that I do and to see someone love it as much as I do is a rewarding experience. It only drives and motivates you to carry on the work to the highest standards.

What book would you recommend?

To be honest I’m not much of a huge reader but I am a big fan of Biff and Chip books though. However, my favourite film of all time is Fight Club. The story line constantly keeps you on the edge of your seat and Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden has the best style of any film character. No one is ever ready for the ending of the film when they watch it for the first time.
